PETIE'S INFORMATION

Chocolate is a no no for pets, even though most pets like the taste.  It contains a compound called theobromine, which, like caffine, is dangerous to dogs and cats when eaten.

Chicken bones can also be deadly to your pet.  They should all be removed prior to feeding your dog or cat chicken.  Cooked bones can break into jagged pieces that may pierce your pet's digestive system, causing an expensive trip to the vet or a slow, painful death.

Alcoholic beverages, coffee, fatty foods, yeast dough bread and macademia nuts can lead to stomach upset, diarrhea or even worse an inflammatory condition of the pancreas known as pancreatitis.

Avacados, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins yeast dough, raw/undercooked meat, eggs, onion, garlic and chives, as well as milk are also not good for pets.

Common Poisonous Plants:

Lilies, Sago Palm, Tulip/Narcissus bulb, Azalea/Rhodeodendron, Oleander, Caster Bean, Cyclamin, Kalanchoe, Yew, Amaryllis, Autumn Crocus, Crysanthemum, English and Glacier Ivy, Peace Lily, Schefflera,  Arrowhead Vine, Asparagus Fern, Bird of Paradise, Boston Ivy, Caladium, Calia Lily, Christmas Rose, Creeping Charlie, Creeping Fig, Crown of Thorns, Daffodil, Dieffenbachia, Dumbcane, Easter Lily, Elephant Ears, Emerald Duke, English Holly, Heartleaf, Iris, Hedera, Jerusalem Cherry, Lilly of the Valley, Majesty, Mistletoe, Nephtytis, Parlor Ivy, Philodendron, Poinsettia, Pothos, Pot Mum, Primrose, Red Princess, Saddleleaf, Spider Mum, Sprengeri Fe, Umbrella Plant, Weeping Fig

You can't monitor your dog or cats every taste, so it's important to recognize the symptoms that mean a pet may have tried something toxic.  In dogs and cats, watch for drooling, glazed eyes, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, lethargy, tremors, and seizures.  If you suspect your pet has been poisoned, call your vet, the nearest animal emergency clinic or even your state poison control center as soon as possible.

For you folks who have dogs outside, please make sure they have a dry place out of the weather to sleep.  You can fill their dog houses with clean hay, wheat straw or cedar shavings.    Dry leaves put in a doghouse will also work.  Please make sure you change it regularly to keep it clean and dry.  Also in this hot weather, make sure that your animals have plenty of water and check it daily because the animals will drink extra water.and also the fresh water taste better to them.   Another important thing to remember is that the animals need shade from the sun and that the sun moves during the day so different areas need shading.

In the summer time walking on hot pavement can cause burns and blisters on your dog's paws. Don't leae your dog or cat in a car during hot weater.  A pet caught in the heat for too long may suffer a heat stroke.  Signs of heat stroke include the skin being hot to the touch, vomiting, drooling, rapid panting, distress, loss of coordination, collapse and unconsciousness.  Cool the head and body with wet towels, ice packs or cold water.  Do not immerse the pet in cold water.  Small amounts of water to drink may be offered after the pet is cooling down..

HOW OLD SHOULD YOUR PUPPY BE WHEN YOU SELECT IT?  Kennel owners like to sell puppies at 6-8 weeks old because they make the most profit then having had the puppy for a short while.  However, if you are buying the pup from a kennel, it is recommended that you buy a 10-12 week -old pup.  It may be as old as 6 months when obtained if it has had loving care from a kennel or family.  But remember, when its formative weeks have been spent in the company of other animals with little personal attention. it could be difficult to handle.  A puppy who is accustomed to the human touch will make a better pet.  Check your local animal shelter or humane society before deciding what pet to choose.  They usually have all kinds, shapes, sizes, and colors.  For every pet you buy from a breeder, one dies at the pound.

SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A MALE OR FEMALE?  Many people favor a female because she is often quieter and more conservative than her male counterpart.  She is also considered cleaner and easier to train, but some people are wary about her "heat" period, a time when she is capable of conceiving and is particularly popular with the males of her species.  However, this problem can be solved by having her spayed.  Other people enjoy the outgoing behavior exhibited by the male, even though he does have a tendency to get into fights with other dogs and wander away from home in search of sexual adventure, unless neutered.  A spayed or neutered pet saves you headaches and money in the long run.  We offer low cost spay/neuter.  If you're interested in prices or date, please call 770-358-4569 for more information.
